a new Mobile WiMAX

Samsung has just taken the wraps off the SPH-P9000, a new Mobile WiMAX and CDMA 1x EV-DO supporting phone. The phone does voice communication using CDMA 1x EV-DO and multimedia through the new Mobile WiMAX network. The device was unveiled at the Mobile WiMAX Summit 2006 held in Seoul, Korea.

Phone can be a bit of a misnomer for the SPH-P9000, which has a 1GHz Transmeta CPU, a 5-inch WVGA (854x480, 16:9) LCD display, 30GB built-in hard drive, a full fold-out QWERTY keyboard, 1.3-megapixel digital camera, Bluetooth with BT Messenger, and USB. The device runs the full Microsoft Windows XP operating system, not Windows Mobile.

"Our new SPH-P9000 is just one of the few Mobile WiMAX convergence devices to be introduced to the world. Micromax Performance

Performance

To start of the list of mediocrity that is to follow, the Q5C has a very basic camera. Two megapixels isn’t much to boast about, and the flash unit is pretty useless as well, unless the subject is a few inches away. The headset doesn’t offer very good quality, but it’s reasonably loud. The loudspeaker is relatively tinny. The earpiece has acceptable volume level on a call, the, although the Lemon Trio 320 trumps the Q5C here. In-call clarity is not good – in zone three we had disconnected calls along with some serious distortion. In zone two there was noticeable distortion to the voice, and the vocals sound a little tinny – there is also some infrequent buzzing on the line. In zone one we had no serious problems, except that voices still sound a little too mechanical/metallic and not natural. On a slightly positive note, the phone interface is quite responsive. Nor did we expect it to be otherwise, given the rather simplistic, non-taxing menu system and the feature set.

Conclusion

The make or break for an entry-level cellphone is typically its pricing. Unfortunately, for the Q5C it is priced at Rs. 6,499 – not exactly an entry-level price point. Looking at the feature set, and the performance garnered from it, it’s apparent that the Q5C isn’t good value for money. At 4,500 bucks, we’d give it a nod. But the interface for such a device has to be spotless, and the QWERTY keypad on the phone is anything but usable. What’s the use if the selling point of a device is also its weak spot? Give it a wide berth.

Specifications: Display: 2.2-inches, 320 x 240 pixels, 2,62,000 colours; Camera: 2.0–megapixels; Weight: 95 grams; battery: 1300 mAh; dimensions: 112mmx58mmx13.5mm

Micromax Handset

Micromax is another brand that is on the release warpath - phone after phone, in reasonably quick succession. This strategy seems to work well with the lower price-rungs of the market. The Q5C represents their latest offering, featuring a full QWERTY keypad that has become something of a buzzword for today’s generation. Obviously, the people most likely to be making better use of a QWERTY keypad are corporate users and executives who do a lot of emailing. Home users who do a lot of SMSing will also benefit from having a full keypad. We’ve already established the comfort and ergonomics of having a full keypad rather than a number keypad where multiple presses or judicious use of T9 is required to type out messages. However, no two QWERTY keypads are created equal, so a full keypad doesn’t necessitate usability or ergonomics. If you get our drift here, consider it as a spoiler for what is to come.

Look and feel

One look at the chrome bezel running around the facia and it’s evident that the Q5C steals its attire from the Blackberry 8900 Curve. Given the wide bezel, the display could have been made marginally bigger. The phone uses glossy black plastic for the body and this along with the chrome gives a slightly garish appearance. If this could be forgiven, the rather large button amid the four-way joypad is also chromed, and voila – overdone.

The quality of plastic used is pretty mediocre. The 3.5mm headphone jack is located atop the device, while volume rocker (that works flawlessly) is on the left side. Below this is a button dedicated to the music player. A micro USB port with protective flap is also on the left side. The right side is relatively bare with a microSD slot. The cover this slot is very hard to remove, and even with grown fingernails we had to wrestle with it. Overall build quality is mediocre, but really, this is something that one should expect from a phone in this price range.

The call buttons are pretty well laid out, and the joypad has a very intuitive feel. It exudes wonderful feedback that some 3x costlier handsets would be envious of. The left and right menu buttons also have wonderful feedback but they’re stuck to the joypad, spacing them out would have lent to their intuitiveness.

Being a QWERTY, we spent a significant amount of time on the keypad and to be frank, the experience was underwhelming, disappointing amid other similar adjectives. For one key pressing isn’t intuitive – the keys have insufficient feedback and there’s no positive feeling like you have pressed a key. The layout of the keys is wrong – they’re small, closely placed and lack proper bevelling – a total goof up in terms of design. This makes typing a hit and miss affair and one never feels comfortable enough to type even a shorter SMS without constantly keeping tabs on your fingers – (very close tabs), else you’ll end up with typos.

The menu icons could have been a little more indicative of the content they contain, or a little more colourful and lively, even Nokia’s archaic Symbian interface does a better job. There is a single row of shortcuts on the home screen for commonly used functions. A Facebook client is also present, as is Nimbuzz – a pretty useful application that allows calling, chatting and messaging with contacts from multiple sources like your phonebook, Yahoo Messenger, Skype, Google Talk and Facebook among others. Facebook seems especially important for the Q5C as there’s a dedicated hard key for it just below the left menu button. On the whole the menu system is pretty simple, although the menu icons can get confusing, meaning first time users will need to play around and get used to the location of things.

New BlackBerry

BlackBerry Curve 9330

BlackBerry’s got the 9300 and 9330 handsets under its Curve 3G wing so far. Sprint and RIM have jointly announced the imminent arrival of the BlackBerry Curve 3G 9330 on the carrier’s network. Other features include visual voicemail, dedicated media keys, a 2MP camera cum video recorder, GPS and Wi-Fi 802.11b/g connectivity.

“The new BlackBerry Curve 3G is an extremely attractive, approachable and affordable handset that provides a perfect choice for Sprint customers who are looking for a user-friendly 3G smartphone to help them make the most of their day,” explained David J. Smith, vice president of Product Management at RIM.

The handset is required to be paired with an Everything Data plan that starts at $69.99 a month or a Business Advantage Messaging and Data plan. The carrier also offers customers Everything Data plans with Any Mobile, Anytime plans apart from the Sprint Free Guarantee and Ready Now service.

Cleaning tools

Although many companies have created products to help improve the process of cleaning your computer and peripherals, users can also use household items to clean their computers and peripherals. Below is a listing of items you may need or want to use while cleaning your computer or computer peripherals.

Keep in mind that some components in your computer may only be able to be cleaned using a product designed for cleaning that component; if this is the case, it will be mentioned in the cleaning tips.

  • Cloth - A cloth is the best tool used when rubbing down a component; although paper towels can be used with most hardware, we recommend using a cloth when ever possible. Caution: We only suggest you use a cloth when cleaning components such as the outside of the case, a drive, mouse, etc. You should not use a cloth to clean any circuitry such as the RAM or motherboard since they can generate ESD that can damage electronics.
  • Water or rubbing alcohol - When moistening a cloth, it is best to use water or rubbing alcohol. Other solvents may be bad for the plastics used with your computer.
  • Portable Vacuum - Sucking the dust, dirt, hair, cigarette particles, and other particles out of a computer can be one of the best methods of cleaning a computer. Over time, these items can restrict the airflow in a computer and cause circuitry to corrode. Do not use a standard vacuum as it can generate a lot of static electricity that can damage your computer.
  • Cotton swabs - Cotton swaps moistened with rubbing alcohol or water are excellent tools for wiping hard to reach areas in your keyboard, mouse, and other locations.
  • Foam swabs - Whenever possible, it is better to use lint-free swabs such as foam swabs.

General cleaning Tips

General cleaning Tips
Below is a listing of general tips that should be taken when cleaning any of the components or peripherals of a computer as well as tips to help keep a computer clean.
1. Never spray or squirt any type of liquid onto any computer component. If a spray is needed, spray the liquid onto a cloth and then use that cloth to rub down the component.
2. Users can use a vacuum to suck up dirt, dust, or hair around their computer on the outside case and on their keyboards. However, do not use a vacuum for the inside of your computer as it generates a lot of static electricity that can damage the internal components of your computer. If you need to use a vacuum to clean the inside of your computer, use a portable battery powered vacuum designed to do this job.
3. When cleaning a component and/or the computer, turn it off before cleaning.
4. Never get any component inside the computer or any other circuit board damp or wet.
5. Be cautious when using any type of cleaning solvents; some individuals may have allergic reactions to chemicals in cleaning solvents and some solvents can even damage the case. Try to always use water or a highly diluted solvent.
6. When cleaning, be careful not to accidentally adjust any knobs or controls. In addition, when cleaning the back of the computer, if anything is plugged in, make sure not to disconnect any of the plugs.
7. When cleaning fans, especially the smaller fans within a portable computer or laptop it's suggested that you either hold the fan or place something in-between the fan blades to prevent it from spinning. Spraying compressed air into a fan or cleaning a fan with a vacuum may cause damage to some fans or in some cases cause back voltage.
8. Never eat or drink around the computer.
9. Limit smoking around the computer.

Cleaning your computer

Introduction Cleaning your computer and your computer components and peripherals helps keep the components and computer in good working condition and helps keep the computers from spreading germs. To the right is an example image of how dirty the inside of your computer case can get. This example is a dirty computer case fan.

Depending on the environment that your computer operates in determines how often you should clean your computer case. The below list is our recommendation and may change depending upon your computer's environment.

How often should I clean my computer?

The frequency of how often you should clean your computer varies on several different factors. To help you determine how often you need to clean your computer we've created the below chart, check each of the boxes below that apply to your computers environment to see how often to clean your computer.
